With over 200 2 lamp 4' fluorescent fixtures in scope this Monkton Ontario Turkey Farm was poised to consume over $ 16,000.00 a year in lighting energy. A solution was sought out that would allow the farm to create a simulated daylight schedule that would maximize production. This would be achieved by providing the right light spectrum for growth as well as the recommended foot candles.

Peter Gazdzinski DVM.,Ph.D., Dip Path..Dip.ACPV. Cuddy Farms Limited 2008 wrote "For optimal reproduction of turkeys, fluorescent lights producing longer wavelengths in orange and red spectrum should be used. The experiments conducted by Halawani (1) have shown that the wavelength of 630 nm is optimal for egg production in turkey breeders." Ecopower LED Linears peak in the 630nm range.

The decision to go to LED dimmable technology was made. 200+ fixtures were retrofitted with Ecopower LED dimmable linears at 36 watts per fixture, a delta reduction of 69.5% in energy consumption.

LED LINEAR TECHNOLOGY & POULTRY

There are a lot of choices available in LED lighting but few provide the correct light spectrum and footcandle requirements for poultry production. The visible light spectrum of humans and poultry are not the same and care and consideration needs to be taken when designing lighting systems for poultry production that will maximize both growth and production while minimizing injury. Perceived light intensity for humans and poultry is very much different with poultry being much more sensitive to light intensity than humans. If we can dim the light in these sensitive wavelengths we can still provide enough light for the birds and save electricity. As the Ecopower LED linears dim they maintain their 630nm red spectrum output that is beneficial for layers and breeders.

The science of colour light spectrum and intensity and how it affects poultry production is by no means complete. We do know however that lower foot candle levels for layers and breeders while maintaining spectral power distribution is beneficial in both increasing sexual maturation and lowering the incidence of pecking.
